When we first announced the Hyvä Associate Developer Certification, we wanted to give developers a clear way to show they understood the fundamentals of building with Hyvä.

The response was even better than we expected, and it quickly became clear that the community wanted a way to prove deeper expertise. Experienced developers were looking for something that reflected real project experience and advanced knowledge.

So we created that next step.

Today, the Hyvä Professional Developer Certification is available as the advanced level in our certification path.

The Hyvä certification path has two levels right now:

Hyvä Associate Developer

The Associate Developer Certification is your foundation for creating great Hyvä builds. It covers the core building blocks of Hyvä and Magento frontend development, providing a rock-solid baseline to build on. This exam is ideal for developers who want to:

• Understand the fundamentals of Hyvä
• Learn how Hyvä fits into Magento’s frontend architecture
• Prove they know how to use Hyvä’s core components
• Build confidence before tackling the Professional level

What to expect:

• 60 questions
• 90 minutes
• Passing score: 70 percent
• Price: €200 (excl. VAT)
• Online proctored exam through Webassessor
• Designed so you can pass by studying the Hyvä docs

Hyvä Professional Developer

This Professional Developer Certification is designed for experienced developers who work with Hyvä day-to-day and want to demonstrate advanced, real-world capability. It’s for those who:

• Have real Hyvä project experience
• Work regularly with the Magento frontend
• Use Tailwind CSS, Alpine.js, and compatibility modules
• Care about Core Web Vitals, frontend performance, and building stores that are fast, not just “good enough Lighthouse scores”

Where the Associate exam shows that you know the basics, the Professional exam proves you can apply that knowledge to real-world challenges.

What to expect:

• Based on Hyvä Theme 1.3.18
• 90 minutes
• 60 questions
• Passing score: 67 percent
• Online proctored exam through Webassessor
• Priced at €250 (excl. VAT)

• Layout XML, Blocks & View Models: Layout merging, handles, and block cache usage.
• Templates: Secure escaping and rendering child templates.
• Themes: Sharing Tailwind config and managing child themes.
• Compatibility Modules: Replacing Luma JavaScript, overriding templates, and registering modules the right way.
• Tailwind CSS & Hyvä: Theme customisation, CSS variables, and performance-safe custom fonts.
• Alpine.js & JavaScript: Reusable components, CSP-safe code, avoiding unsafe-inline/unsafe-eval, script loading patterns, and controlling DOM size.
• Frontend Performance & Core Web Vitals: FCP, LCP, INP, CLS, TTFB, and practical optimisation using Lighthouse and other tooling.
• Hyvä Features: Modals, product sliders, validation library, and CMS Tailwind configuration.

Several early candidates described it as a performance-centric exam with a strong focus on Core Web Vitals, LCP and INP, and practical optimisation scenarios. So if you love squeezing every millisecond out of a storefront, you’ll feel right at home.

A few highlights from developers who have already taken the Professional exam:

• Their project experience helped, but alone was not enough, and they still went back through the docs to prepare.
• Others noted that some questions were long and required careful reading, but nothing fell outside what is documented in the Hyvä Theme docs.
• It was recommended to keep your mind clear and mark the questions you want to review again. Take it slow and use the time you have available.

The recurring theme: if you work with Hyvä regularly and you are willing to read the docs properly, the exam is challenging in a good way, not impossible.

A simple way to get ready:

1. Read the Professional Exam Guide

It lists all topics, expected knowledge, and includes sample questions.

2. Revisit the Hyvä Docs

Focus on compatibility modules, Alpine CSP patterns, Tailwind config, CSS variables, and Core Web Vitals.

3. Connect concepts to your project work

Think through performance issues, compatibility challenges, and where you improved UX.

4. Practise scenario-style thinking

You don’t need to memorise APIs, but you do need to choose the best approach for each situation.

5. Follow the recommended certification path

Taking the Associate exam first can help build confidence and a solid foundation for the Professional exam.

After passing the Hyvä Professional Developer exam, you will receive a digital certificate and a Hyvä Credly badge you can share on LinkedIn, your CV, and your website. But not only that, this certification gives you:

• Recognition that you can build fast, clean, high-quality Magento stores with Hyvä
• Extra credibility with clients, colleagues, and hiring managers
• A concrete way to support your agency’s position in the Hyvä Agency Partner Programme, where certifications are one of the quality signals we look at.

Certifications are not the only measure of a good developer. As Vinai shared in his Hyvä Certification talk at Meet Magento Ukraine, brilliant developers can struggle in exam conditions, and that does not make them any less talented.

But certifications do help with a few important things:

• They make it easier for agencies and merchants to see who has put in the work to really understand Hyvä.
• They encourage developers to go beyond “it works on my machine” and dig into performance, maintainability, and best practices.
• They raise the bar for Hyvä builds across the ecosystem, which is good for everyone - merchants, agencies, and users.
