How a solo founder beat the big players — launched in a month, built to last
When Chris Jinks founded X Memorabilia in early 2025, he had over 15 years of experience in the sports memorabilia industry — but he was starting from zero online. The challenge wasn't finding inventory. It was building a credible, high-performance digital storefront fast, with no agency, no large team, and a market full of well-established competitors.
The sports and entertainment memorabilia market is a $26 billion global industry, and trust is everything. Buyers expect to see clear provenance, digital certificates of authenticity, high-resolution item photos, and a shopping experience that feels as polished as the products on offer. Anything less and you lose the sale — and the reputation.
Chris needed a platform that would let him move quickly, stay lean, and not trade away long-term control for short-term convenience.

The decision about Magento and Hyvä: Why not Shopify?
Shopify was the obvious default. It's fast to set up, familiar, and widely used by retail merchants launching online. But Chris looked at the economics and the architecture, and the answer was clear.
Ownership vs. Rental
With Magento Open Source and Hyvä, Chris owned the asset. The codebase was his. The data was his. The infrastructure was his to choose and optimise. The upfront investment was real, but the long-term cost curve was fundamentally different.
Magento Open Source with Hyvä gives far more control and ownership than platforms like Shopify. It allows full control over the design, performance and integrations, without platform transaction fees or vendor lock-in. This flexibility made it possible to build a fast, tailored store that supports the specific needs of our business.

The build: one month, one person
The entire X Memorabilia store was built and launched in approximately one month, by Chris himself, without an agency. That's not a typical Magento story. It's the Hyvä story.
Traditional Magento frontends are heavy, slow, and developer-intensive. Hyvä Theme strips that complexity away. Built on Alpine.js and Tailwind CSS, the frontend is lightweight, modern, and fast to work with. The codebase is readable. The build cycle is short. And the result performs.
Hyvä made it possible to build a fast, modern Magento site that can genuinely compete with much bigger players in the memorabilia industry. It gave us the performance, flexibility and user experience we needed right from launch.
Built for the way buyers actually shop
Memorabilia buyers are mobile. They're browsing on their phones, comparing items, checking provenance photos up close, and making emotionally-driven purchases that require trust signals at every step. A slow, clunky experience doesn't just frustrate — it kills the sale.
X Memorabilia was designed mobile-first from day one. Hyvä's minimal JavaScript footprint means pages load fast regardless of device or connection quality. Filtering is responsive. Product pages are clean and information-dense without feeling busy. The focus was to remove friction at the most critical moments of the customer journey.
But UX isn't just about speed. The store handles multiple data types simultaneously: high-resolution product images, item-specific digital certificates of authenticity, real-time inventory, and provenance information. Hyvä's lightweight architecture keeps all of this composable and reliable.

Results: competing from day one
X Memorabilia launched in January 2025 and has grown steadily through organic search ever since. Without any paid traffic or legacy domain authority, the site has built visibility in a competitive niche dominated by well-funded, long-established players.

The growth pattern is meaningful: consistent month-on-month improvement as more products and pages were indexed, and organic visibility accelerating in the second half of the year as the site gained authority.
This is the compound effect of getting the technical foundation right from launch — fast pages, clean structure, strong Core Web Vitals — rather than trying to retrofit performance later.

The bigger lesson: small can win with the right technology
X Memorabilia is proof that you don't need a large team, a big budget, or an agency to launch a high-performance Magento store. You need the right stack.
Hyvä changes the economics of Magento for small and independent operators. Where traditional Magento was once prohibitively complex and expensive for a solo founder, Hyvä's lean architecture and developer-friendly tooling makes it genuinely accessible. A one-person build in a month is not a workaround — it's the product working as intended.
And once you've built it, you own it. There's no monthly rental creep, no platform dependency, no revenue-based fee scaling against your growth. The store is an asset, not a liability.
What Chris would do differently
- Prepare more SEO content — blog posts, FAQs, long-form category pages — before launch, to capitalise on the site's technical performance from day one.
Advice for merchants considering Hyvä
- If performance, SEO, and long-term maintainability matter to your business, Hyvä is the right choice.
- Keep your build lean. Avoid unnecessary extensions and third-party dependencies — they compound your maintenance burden.
- Start with the right foundation. It's significantly easier to build fast than to fix slow after the fact.
- Don't let 'it's Magento' put you off. With Hyvä, the complexity is manageable — even for a solo build.
